Use ChatGPT to Create Blog Post Ideas and Outlines

Updated September 18th, 2024.

Do you have a blog? If not, are you thinking of making one? And either way, do you sometimes get Writer’s Block, running out of things to write (or maybe you just don’t feel like thinking that hard)? ChatGPT can help. First, it can help by suggesting blog post topics. Second, it can prepare outlines for these suggested blog post, giving you a big head start. Let’s see how it’s done.

These screenshots are from the ChatGPT app for the Mac but there’s nothing “Mac app specific” here. You can use ChatGPT in a browser on a Mac or a PC and it will work out just as well. I am using ChatGPT 4o in these examples.

I want to write ten blog posts, but I’m having trouble getting started. I’ll start by asking ChatGPT for some blog post ideas. My blog is about helping people get more from their Mac, iPhones, and iPads, so I want ideas for Apple device-related how-to articles.

Generating Blog Post Ideas

I asked ChatGPT this question:

“I need blog post ideas. My blog is about helping people get more from their Mac, iPhones, and iPads, so I want ideas for Apple device-related how-to articles. I want articles that will be interesting to a lot of people, and I want the articles to be fairly short, so we don’t want anything too specific or too complicated. Can you give me ten blog post ideas matching those requirements?”

Here’s what came back:

Blog post topics, generated by ChatGPT.
1. How to Use AirDrop to Instantly Share Files Between Your iPhone, iPad, and Mac
2. Quick Tips to Extend Your iPhone’s Battery Life Without Sacrificing Performance
3. How to Create and Use Custom Memoji on iPhone and iPad
4. Simple Ways to Speed Up Your Mac for Better Performance
5. How to Scan Documents Using Your iPhone’s Built-in Notes App
6. 5 Hidden iPhone Features You Didn’t Know You Could Use
7. How to Sync Your iPhone, iPad, and Mac to Keep Everything Updated Automatically
8. Master Safari’s Tab Groups on iPhone, iPad, and Mac to Organize Your Browsing
9. How to Enable and Use Focus Mode on iPhone and iPad to Minimize Distractions
10. Using Siri Shortcuts to Automate Common Tasks on iPhone and iPad

Those are really good ideas! I’m going to use them.

Now let’s get some help writing the posts. We already have some bullet points in ChatGPT’s answer to my first question, but let’s get a more detailed outline.

Generating Outlines for Blog Posts

Continuing in the chat I’m already having with ChatGPT:

“Those are very good! Now, can you flesh them out a little. I need outlines for each topic. If you could make an outline for each topic, that would be great. Keep the titles and summaries as you have shown above, but create an outline to help guide the creation of these blog posts.”

Here’s how ChatGPT replied regarding the first two topics:

The rest were just as good:

ChatGPT's outlines for the "How to Scan using Notes" and "Hidden iPhone Tips" blog posts

Conclusion

ChatGPT did a great job of coming up with blog post topics that would appeal to a wide audience, and it did a great job of creating outlines for the blog posts. The job of writing ten blog posts is suddenly a lot easier. Give this technique a try– it will save you hours and hours of time, and make the job much easier.
