Mac OS X 10.6.8 Printing Issue, and a Fix!

— Mac OS X 10.6.8 Printing Issue, and a Fix! —

We interrupt The iMom Project to bring you this news about the Mac OS X 10.6.8 update. If you have a networked printer there is a chance that the printer won’t work after you update to 10.6.8. 10.6.7 works perfectly but 10.6.8 has a problem. Think it over before automatically clicking “Install.”

UPDATE: the 10.6.8 Supplemental Update fixes the problem. (7-25-2011)

The problem has been traced to a small change in the printing system. It appears to be a mistake. Fortunately, the fix is relatively easy. Thanks to Eliran Sapir for the fix. Click here to get it.

If your printer is connected with a USB cable don’t worry, this issue won’t affect you. But if you use a networked HP printer, or a networked Xerox, or a networked Canon or networked Minolta, or many others, you may run into the problem. The symptom is you try to print and right away the printer reports “paused” even though it is not. You won’t make it work by resetting the printer system or reloading drivers or repairing permissions, so don’t bother. Just use Eliran’s fix. It only takes a minute and you’ll be back in business.

If you’re still having problems, your problem is not the one caused by the 10.6.8 update. In that case, you may find your answer in my article on resetting the printing system. Still stuck after that? Use the form on my contact page to get help from me.

  1. The update doesn't fix the problem for me.

It's about time people stopped using Apple. Steve Job's incessant repetition of the phrase "It just works" is complete and utter BS. I have more luck with Ubuntu and it's free.

  2. Hi Christian – perhaps you could help me: I've updated to a 10.6.8 and have a DCP-7020 brother installation disc. When the disc is in, a series of clicks sounds and then the disc spits out.

    Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

    R.

  3. Hi R–

Go to this page and download the driver. That will at least get you the software you need.
    http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us_ot/en/dlf/download_index.html?reg=us&c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=dcp7020_us&dlid=&flang=English&os=94&type2=-1

Not sure why the disc isn't working but if other discs do work, it's probably just a bad disc. And you don't need it, since you can download the software yourself.

If the link above doesn't work, start at http://www.brother.com and you'll be able to find the driver for your model.

  4. Christian I have a mac pro 10.6.8 running on snow leopard and i bought a cheap canon printer (the LP6000B) as i just need to print some pages when I'm home time to time. I used the canon cd rom for installation but it did not work so I found a software on canon europe website (as I am in italy now) . I downloaded that software but the printer does not work. It does not print characters. I found an interesting page on internet which explains that there is a problem of protocol and suggests to go to finder -go to folders- then hidden folders but i found that procedure too complicated.

  5. malù–

Do you connect to the printer with USB?

When you say the Canon CD did not work, do you mean the disc is defective, or do you mean the software would not install, or do you mean the software installed but did not work?

Did you get the software download from Canon's site–

    http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/imageclass_series/imageclass_lbp6000#DriversAndSoftware

    ?

Finally, when you say it does not print characters, does it print anything at all?

If it were me I would go to System Preferences, the Print & Fax, and then REMOVE and Canon LPB 6000 printers, and then add it again, and see if that works. I don't have one of those printers but here is some info that might be useful– found on the web–

Once you have the driver installed and the printer connected and turned on, open any printable document, then:

    File > Print
Choose "Add Printer…" in the Printer dropdown menu
You will see LBP6000/LBP6018 in the box that appears. Ignore it. Instead, click on "More printers…" in the bottom left corner of the same box.
Another box will appear with a dropdown menu at the top, giving you two choices. Choose "CANON USB (CUPS CAPT)," which will give you the model number again. Click on it, then "Add," and voila!

    let me know–

    c
